Low-Fat Strawberry-Banana Yogurt Smoothie 1 cu...

As you may have read earlier, June is National Dairy Month.  A great way to celebrate is with an iced cold smoothie!  Not only are they tasty, the health benefits are huge.  The new 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines indicate that adults and children nine years and older, should be consuming 3 daily servings of low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products. For children ages 4-8, the recommendation was increased from 2 to 2.5 servings, and for children ages 2-3, the recommendation remains 2 servings.  While milk provides nine key vitamins and minerals, other beverage options come up empty on some or all of the nutrients found in a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk. Choosing nutrient-rich foods first is an excellent way to help you build a healthier diet.

SO, what a fun way to meet your nutritional needs than drinking a yummy smoothie??!! One of my favorite ways to be sure I’m getting enough calcium for this osteopenia body of mine (one step down from osteoporosis caused by aggressive steriod treatment for the Crohn’s/UC).  At the same time I’m sneaking in a portion of my daily intake of Vitamin D and Potassium, among a total of 9 nutrients offered in milk.  Just DON’T TELL WILLIS!!! I don’t know if that would stop him from inhaling a smoothie or a glass of milk for that matter but it seems like if you tell him something is good for you, he’s no longer interested.

My new favorite smoothie is the Riot Smoothie….let me tell you what, it really creates a riot with my taste buds. Yum, yum, yum!  And, I get a riot over the fact that it was created by a 10 year old boy! (pun intended)  Since it’s Wednesday and I’m feeling nice I’ll share the recipe with YOU!  I know, you feel so privelaged, right?

The Riot Smoothie (please forgive the stock photo, I keep forgetting to take my own)

  • 1⁄2 cup low-fat milk
  • 8-10 ice cubes

Clean and cut fruit. Place all ingredients in blender beginning with yogurt; blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into glasses and serve.  SIDE NOTE: you could garnish with a fresh strawberry sliced down the middle (only half-way) and placed on the top of your glass.
